How to Start

Step 1: Confirm Your Eligibility

Before you apply, make sure you meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 17 years old at the time of the application and 18 by the time you’re ready to start.
  • Have a high school diploma, GED or higher.
  • Have completed one full year of algebra with a passing grade.*
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Reside within the Local 163 jurisdiction.

Step 2: Apply Online

  • Create your TradeSchool account.
  • Fill out the application form.
  • Official sealed transcripts (high school, College, or GED) must be mailed or delivered directly to the JATC at
    414 W. Church St. Nanticoke PA 18634
  • Upload a copy of your valid driver’s license.

Applications are accepted year-round, so you can apply whenever you’re ready.

Step 3: Take the Aptitude Test

  • The test takes about 3 hours and covers algebra and reading comprehension.
  • You’ll need a score of 4 or higher to qualify for an interview.
  • Test preparation courses are available through the JATC. Those interested should contact the JATC directly for details.
  • Testing sessions are held monthly.

Step 4: Interview with the Selection Panel

  • Meet with a panel of IBEW and NECA representatives.
  • Expect a 10-20 minute interview focused on real-life scenarios.
  • Dress in business casual attire.
  • Demonstrate your reliability, teamwork and readiness for the program.

Step 5: Receive Your Results

  • You’ll be notified of your status by letter or email.
  • If selected, you’ll begin your paid apprenticeship.
  • Attend classes twice a week in Nanticoke.
  • Earn scheduled raises and industry certifications as you advance.

Step 6: Launch Your Electrical Career

  • Get hands-on training from experienced journeymen.
