The Pathway to a Successful Career

There are two pathways to begin your career through the IBEW Local 163 JATC:

While there are subtle differences between the two programs, both lead to membership in the Local Union and afford you the opportunity to work under a Collective Bargaining Agreement and enjoy the benefits of organized labor, including excellent healthcare and retirement benefits.

Register Apprenticeship Program

The IBEW Local 163 JATC’s Registered Apprenticeship Program is the most common and well-known way to join the union.

World-Class Education and Training

IBEW Local 163 apprentices receive industry-leading education through the Earn While You Learn model, which combines hands-on jobsite training and classroom instruction at our Nanticoke training center. Expert instructors, certified through the Electrical Training Alliance, provide industry-leading instruction.

Our training program is built to help everyone succeed. Whether you’re a single parent, changing careers or seeking a fresh start, our instructors are dedicated to your growth and offer patient guidance and practical expertise every step of the way.

Career Progression and College Credit

There are many benefits to becoming a Local 163 apprentice, including a five-year program structured around clear milestones for both pay increases and skill development, as well as raises after each year as you reach new skill levels. Graduates earn college credits and can apply them toward further education, if desired.

Completing the Local 163 Registered Apprenticeship Program opens various career paths for men and women, including working as a journeyman, supervisor, project manager, contractor, or even pursuing a degree. With no student debt and real-world experience, you will be well-prepared for long-term success in the electrical industry.

CE/CW Program

In addition to the Registered Apprenticeship program, IBEW Local 163 also offers the Construction Electrician/Construction Wireman program. The CE/CW program provides an alternative entry point into the electrical trade for those who may not yet meet the requirements for apprenticeship or who are looking for a different path to a rewarding career.

As a CE or CW, you can start working in the electrical field and gain valuable on-the-job experience while earning a competitive wage and receiving union benefits. The program is designed to help you build your skills and knowledge at your own pace, with opportunities to advance as you gain experience.

Many individuals who begin as a CE or CW eventually transition into the formal apprenticeship program or continue to grow within the CE/CW ranks, finding long-term, stable careers in the electrical industry.
