IBEW Local 163 JATC Hosts ICRA Class

We recently had the opportunity to host an ICRA (Infection Control Risk Assessment) continuing education class for IBEW Local 163 journeymen at the Nanticoke JATC, led by Rich Slivkanich, a nationally recognized master trainer who teaches ICRA courses across the United States to all construction trades.

Current and Relevant Information

This training provided our members with the most current and relevant information needed to work professionally and safely on medical and healthcare job sites, including hospitals, manufacturing facilities, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers. These environments demand a higher level of awareness, coordination, and responsibility, and our members are expected to meet that standard every day.

Understanding the medical field does more than help us comply with site requirements. It makes us better journey workers for the patients receiving care, for the staff operating these facilities, and for the health and safety of our own families when we return home. That knowledge is a differentiating factor, and it’s part of what sets IBEW Local 163 apart.

The class focused on understanding and remaining in compliance with site- and contractor-specific Infection Control Risk Assessment Plans. Topics covered included containment methods, control precautions, airflow management, contamination prevention, proper clothing and PPE, pathogens, and best practices for working alongside medical staff. From bunny suits to understanding staph exposure and maintaining clean environments during active construction, this training addressed real-world conditions our members face on the job.

This course is part of our ongoing continuing education program for journey workers, designed to ensure our labor force stays current, competitive, and highly skilled throughout their careers. In addition to ICRA training, the JATC regularly hosts continuing education classes covering topics such as advanced safety training, code updates, emerging technologies, EV infrastructure, and specialized certifications for critical facilities. Our labor force is educated above and beyond through craft certifications and continued learning opportunities here at the JATC in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. It’s how we protect our members and deliver value to contractors and communities alike.

This training was provided by The Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR), ensuring our members receive nationally recognized, up-to-date instruction aligned with best practices across the industry.
